Exciting times are ahead for you! You’ve decided to take the plunge and emigrate overseas from rainy UK to another part of the beautiful planet we call home. In the midst of all of the planning and preparation though, there is a far more pressing matter on your mind; your darling pet! That’s right, for many of us, moving to another country and leaving our precious pet behind, is the same as leaving a family member behind.

Much as you have the desire to move with your pet, you may be feeling overwhelmed by the whole process! It seems that your own plans are staggering enough, but what about all the red tape for transporting your pet?

Don’t worry, the process doesn’t actually have to be as challenging as you may think. In fact, here comes a checklist of the main things you need to keep in mind for ensuring your precious buddy makes its to your final destination at your side

Check List For Emigrating From The UK To Another Country With Your Pet

1. Your pet needs a valid pet passport. To obtain a passport you will have to give evidence that your pet meets the next two points.
2. Your pet must be up to date with all vaccinations, including rabies and tapeworm.
3. Your pet must be micro-chipped.
4. Your vet must provide you with a letter stating that your pet is in good health and capable of a flight. This letter must be issued a maximum of 24 hours before departure.
5. You must obtain an approved travel container for your pet. Depending on the size of your pet, the container will have to meet a set of measurement requirements.
6. You must reserve travel space for your pet. Pets travel in a separate area to human travellers, so don’t expect to simply rest your furry friend on your knee during the journey!
7. Check whether the country you are moving to requires import or export certificates.
8. If you are bringing a dog with you, then check that your destination country allows the particular breed of dog in the country.

As can be clearly seen from the rather lengthy check-list, bringing a pet with you when you emigrate doesn’t have to be mission impossible, but it does take a considerable amount of time and effort.

Some of the points mentioned above can take weeks, or even months to secure. With this in mind it’s a good idea to start to plan your pet’s journey as early as possible. In particular ensure that you have booked vaccination appointments for your pet well in advance, some vaccinations require a follow-up blood test some time afterwards to ensure the vaccine has worked.

Moving to another country is both an exciting and apprehensive time. Remember that even when you have met the above check-list for your pet, the experience will still be somewhat traumatic for your furry friend. Ensure that you give your pet plenty of attention, both prior to the move, and once you arrive at the other side.
